Some commonly asked questions
How is laser hair removal different from electrolysis?
It is completely different. Electrolysis literally destroys one hair follicle at a time. Imagine the amount of time that would take! Whereas electrolysis involves inserting a needle into each hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to destroy it, laser hair removal delivers light energy in a non-invasive manner to hundreds of hair follicles at once. Laser hair removal does what electrolysis does but in a fraction of the time, and without the pain.
How many sessions will it take?
Most areas can be treated in as little as five sessions however, the number of sessions required varies from person to person depending on hair and skin type, and the size of the area to be treated. Truly, treatment is as individual as you are. There are three phases of hair growth: the anagen (active growth) phase, the catagen (regression) phase, and the telogen (resting) phase. Laser hair removal works when the hair is in the anagen or active growth phase. Since all of the hairs on our faces and bodies are in different growth phases, it is not possible to predict which phase an individual hair is in. Repeated sessions are generally necessary and make laser hair removal extremely effective.
Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?
Longer wavelengths allow for treatment of all skin colors, but works best on hair with pigment. It is safe to use on children. Laser hair removal is an excellent choice for men and women who have unwanted hair on their face and neck, arms, underarms, back, legs, bikini area, hands and feet. It is the ideal choice for those who are tired of the maintenance required by temporary methods of hair removal.
Is laser hair removal painful?
In most cases there is very little, if any pain involved in laser hair removal. The laser actually keeps the skin very comfortable during treatment. However, there are some clients who are more sensitive than others, in which case a numbing cream will be applied before treatment begins.
How does the skin look after it has been treated?
Typically, the skin is a little red and swollen, but only for a short period of time. Of course, this varies from client to client, depending on their skin type and the extent of the treatment. Most clients return to their normal activities immediately following treatment.
Is it okay to shave or sunbathe immediately prior to treatment?
No. Because the laser targets the melanin in the follicle beneath the skin, it is best to shave at least twelve hours prior to treatment. Suntanning should be avoided, and waxing, plucking, and electrolysis should be discontinued at least three weeks before treatment begins.
Is the treatment completely safe?
Yes. The laser pulses for a fraction of a second, long enough to vaporize the pigment and affecting numerous hair follicles at one time, while sparing the surrounding tissue. Laser hair removal has been safely used since 1983, and is FDA approved.
